Edinburgh locals spot thrill-seeking nun paddle boarding off Portobello beach

Visitors to a Scots beach had an unusual sight on Thursday - when a fun-seeking nun hopped onto a paddle board and enjoyed a trip out to sea.

The nun was dressed in her full habit when she accepted the invitation to splash about in the water at Portobello beach in Edinburgh.

The Sister, who is believed to be called Agnes and from Poland, was visiting the capital for the day with two friends when she was pictured in the water.

Kath Thomson - who posted a hilarious image of Sister Agnes to the Porty People Facebook page - said: “Just in case you missed the nun paddle boarding today.

“A lady jokingly offered the nuns a shot of the board and was surprised when one of them took up her invitation. Got to love Porty.”

Caroline Swanson also posted about the unusual sight and gave some information on the three visiting nuns.

Ms Swanson said: “The nun on the board is from Poland and one of the other ladies from Africa. They said they were only in Edinburgh for a few hours.”

Hundreds of locals were also quick to join in the fun after the pictures of the nun frolicking in the water were posted online.

Brian Pendreigh said: “I reckon she expected nun of them would take her up on the offer.”

Heather Stirling posted: “Lovely - I wonder if she’ll make a habit of it.”

And Mark Rintoul added: “Praise the Lord.”
