Edinburgh locals 'saddened' after solidarity mural defaced with offensive graffiti

An Edinburgh mural in a city centre beauty spot has been vandalised with "disgusting" graffiti.

The mural features a large waving Saltire with large words reading “stands with” followed by the Palestine flag.

With the overall message of the mural saying, Scotland stands with Palestine.

The original piece was done around May 21 this year by an artist who goes by the name Parot and it was defaced in the last couple of days.

The artwork is located about half way through the old Innocent Railway Tunnel just underneath Arthur’s Seat.

Ruthless vandals have recently visited the site and scrawled the words “terrorists” across the Palestine Flag.

A local resident who spotted the disgusting graffiti told Edinburgh Live

"The piece was done to raise awareness for Palestine and show solidarity with them and showcase that’s Scotland stands with them and we are stronger together.

"We wanted to show our love and support for Palestine to raise awareness about conflict going on there as well as the oppression. The people of Palestine have had their rights and land taken away from them and can’t live life normally.

"We feel this is not being represented as much in the media and has been ignored by the world leaders. Our piece shows how art like this can make a big impact and show the world that together we can make a difference and change.

"There was someone who vandalised the piece and wrote terrorist on the Palestine flag which is disgusting and out of order.

"I was saddened by this as it was done it for the greater good but someone most likely due to the misrepresentation of Muslims in the media and not educated on the matter, did this.

"We are all human beings at the end of the day and should support one another regardless of race colour or religion."

A City of Edinburgh Council spokesperson said: “This incident has been reported to the team and we will remove the graffiti as soon as possible. Offensive graffiti is a criminal offence and is unacceptable. We would urge anyone with information to contact Police Scotland”.
