Edinburgh locals 'less happy' in 2022 compared to previous years

A new report has found that the people of Edinburgh are less satisfied with life than they had been in previous years.

According to a study by the Office for National Statistics, the city of Edinburgh's life satisfaction levels have dropped from 7.7 out of ten in 2018/19 to 7.4 in 2021/22.

Happiness levels have also dropped, from 7.6 in 2018/19 to just above seven out of ten in 2021/22. Anxiety levels have fluctuated a lot over the last few years, reaching a high of 3.7 out of ten in 2020/21.

They have now dropped to 3.2 out of ten in 2021/22. In the whole of the UK, 22.5 percent reported high levels of anxiety, while 8.5 percent of people reported low levels of happiness.

According to the ONS: "There were no statistically significant changes in average ratings of feeling that the things done in life are worthwhile for Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

"Average ratings for anxiety decreased (improved) across all four countries compared with the previous year. England had the largest increase in average life satisfaction ratings between the year ending March 2021 and year ending March 2022."

Edinburgh had a higher life satisfaction level than Glasgow did, as well as happier people in their city too. This was only 0.4 of a difference for satisfaction in life, and 0.4 as well for happiness levels.

The full statistical report can be viewed on the Office for National Statistics website online.
