Edinburgh locals issued 'danger to life' warning as army run firing exercises in Pentlands

Defence chiefs have warned Edinburgh locals to avoid walks in part of the Pentlands on a number of days in May - while trainees go through firearms and pyrotechnic exercises.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has designated 13 days across for live ammunition and explosives to be tested in the Castlelaw and Dreghorn Training Area (CDTA).

The farmland has been used to put recruits through their paces since the first world war and regularly plays host to weapons practice and munitions drills.

However, a red flag warning has now been put in place for several times during the month, including several exercises expected to last the whole day.

Strict warnings are now in place for the public to avoid the CDTA, which is also popular with walkers, area under “danger to life”.

An MOD statement read: “Blank ammunition and pyrotechnics can potentially be used 24/7, when red flags and/or lights are not hoisted.

“Members of the public are advised to note all signs and warnings before entering the area.

"If the red flags and/or lights are hoisted, regardless of the timings, do not enter the training area."

"This is a danger to life."

Dreghorn Barracks were opened in 1939 in the grounds of the former 17th-century Dreghorn Castle - which was later demolished in 1955.

The Barracks have been home to 3rd Battalion, The Rifles since 2014.
