Edinburgh locals gather on Calton Hill during lockdown with no social distancing

Last night Edinburgh locals were caught on film flouting lockdown rules as huge crowds gathered on Calton Hill to enjoy the capital's warmest day of the year so far.

In footage sent to Edinburgh Live , groups of young people can be seen drinking in large numbers on the city centre hill - despite the strict lockdown rules still in place.

There appears to be no social distancing in place between members of the groups, with the eyewitness who sent the footage telling Edinburgh Live: "I couldn't believe it when I got to the top.

"The tiny clip I got doesn't even cover the many more groups scattered about the top of the hill - so many of them were students who were blasting music and celebrating St Paddy's Day.

"I understand that it was beautiful weather but we're so close to getting out of lockdown, we still all have a responsibility to do the right thing, no matter your age."

The footage comes as groups of people descended on the Meadows yesterday evening, for what one local described as, a "massive Paddy’s Day rave".

Under the current rules, only up to four adults from two households are allowed to meet outdoors, this includes in private gardens, for recreational purposes as well as exercise.

Police attended the scene at the Meadows to disperse the groups but no fines were issued.
