Edinburgh locals fume as huge retirement home to be built in posh neighbourhood

A huge Edinburgh retirement village is set to be approved despite a wave of objections from residents.

The new development on Barnton Avenue West is expected to be granted by the city council on Wednesday after proposals were put forward.

Details have explained that the site will feature a range of different retirement accommodation, with 44 different apartments and four dwelling houses.

Available to those over the age of 55, the site will be made up of four blocks, the tallest of which will be four stores high.

One building will also accommodate a communal area, a guest suite, a managers office and storage for scooters and bikes.

Although the proposed land is prone to flooding, plans have also included a new culvert which will direct water away from the site and protect the new housing.

A report by the Development Management sub-committee of Edinburgh Council stated that the principles of the development “is compatible with the surrounding area”, adding that there will be no serious impact on the neighboring community or environment.

However, the plans have been overwhelmingly objected to by local residents, who live in the wealthy suburb.

Known to be habituated by well-known figures such as J.K Rowling, the area was seen to be overwhelmingly against the new retirement home, with only four notes in favour.

There were in comparison, over 100 objection comments, with a range of issues detailed in the responses.

Known to house a series of large and expensive properties with large grounds, many objections detailed that the new development was “Not in keeping with the rest of the residential developments along west baritone avenue.”

Others had stated that the new retirement site would increase congestion on West Barnton Avenue, and would cause a series of problems with traffic.

A number of complaints also raised concerns that if permitted, the development would set a precent that other large sites could be given the go ahead on the street in the future.

However, following a review from the City of Edinburgh Council, the application is set to be granted at a meeting on Wednesday (October 6).

Speaking about the development size, the report said:

“The surrounding area has a varied built and architectural form. The dominant house type is large detached dwellings set in large garden grounds, but more recently there has been subdivision of plots, new dwellings erected in garden ground and flatted and terraced developments, most notably directly opposite the application site at 9 Barnton Avenue West.

"The character of the surrounding area is therefore varied, with a vast range of architectural style and scale.”
