Reckless vandals scrawled “r*** dungeon enter at your own risk” across the toilet block along with other slurs.

The large black letters are clear to see for anybody, including families and children.

The extremely offensive graffiti could also be triggering to anyone who has survived sexual assault.

Maria Gillen, who reported the disgusting vandalism, told Edinburgh Live said: “I spotted it about 1.30pm today on my afternoon walk with a friend.

"I'm sure many of us have gotten into the habit of going on these walks to try to keep our well being in check.

"After a really rainy, dull morning the sun appeared so we were thankful to be able to take the chance to get out for a bit, which only made noticing this all the more jarring.

"I'm honestly disgusted, angry but also very worried.

"There's obviously no way of knowing who did this but I'd hazard a guess it's been young people. To know this is the mindset of any local kids is harrowing.

"At best it's a disgusting joke, at worst it's really very alarming behaviour."

An Edinburgh Council spokesman said: “This is extremely offensive, and disappointing to see this kind of graffiti and language appear in one of our parks. We’re currently arranging to have it painted over as quickly as we can.”

Councillor Lesley MacInnes added: "This is horrific - have been speaking to council officers and this will get painted over as quickly as possible. So sorry you (and others) had to see this. Thank you very much for reporting it."
