Edinburgh locals burning 2,000 calories in one day on TikTok 'seven hills challenge'

Edinburgh is at the heart of a new TikTok craze, where Scots challenge themselves to climb every hill in Edinburgh all in the same day.

As if climbing Arthur's Seat alone isn't exhausting enough, people are tackling the huge peak alongside, Calton Hill, Edinburgh Castle, Corstorphine Hill, Craiglockhart Hill, Blackford Hill, and Braid Hill.

The challenge is taking locals an average of six to seven hours to complete, with many documenting that they are burning off a whopping 2,000 calories in one day out.

There are now multiple viral videos of the craze on TikTok, where Scots film themselves walking around 45,000 steps at once.

Rachael O'neill, 23, recently completed the challenge with her boyfriend Sam Philp 24 and spoke to Edinburgh Live about the experience.

She said: "We decided to walk between each hill for an added challenge but I think you can either walk or drive.

"Where you start just depends on where you live, we started at Fairmilehead so the first hill we headed over to was Braid Hill.

"We started at half ten and aimed to get it done within five hours but it took just over six hours.

"We didn't really stop, just walked continuously with a five to ten minute break to grab a wee lunch at Tesco.

Rachael said that the challenge was way harder than she expected and at some points, she was left in 'agony.'

She added: "We were on our feet for about six and a half hours in total before we got back to the house.

"Arthur's Seat is the highest so I really recommend getting that done and dusted because if you leave it until last you are not going to want to do it.

"I’m not very active myself and I had not been training or anything for it so my body was in pain and agony after it.

"After the first two hills my legs started to hurt and I thought how am I going to do the challenge.

"We saw so many people also doing it while we were out."

"At one point I couldn't even walk, it was most painful straight after finishing a hill. The walk over to Corstorphine Hill was tough because it was a good 50 minutes.

"At one point we just wanted to get it over with so we thought shall we just run the rest and I tried to run but I couldn't.

"We totaled about 30 kilometers and around 40,000 steps.

"As soon as I got in I fell into bed and it was the most painful straight after and the day after. We ordered a massive takeaway."
