Edinburgh resident shares disgusting commute to work on last day of city bin strikes

A video has been shared online showing one Edinburgh resident walking through the city centre's mounds of rubbish on their way to work - as the bin strikes come to an end.

With bin collection and street cleaning services set to restart on August 30, Edinburgh’s streets will be getting a long-awaited clean up. In a video posted to TikTok, one user has shared their walk through the Old Town on the very last day of the bin strikes.

TikTok user @chica.rubia posted the video, which begins with a shot of North Bridge. With roadworks continuing, rubbish has collected in piles along the street beside metal railings.

We also see Forrest Road, with several skips and street bins overflowing. After receiving some backlash for posting the video, the creator commented: “I think sharing videos like this puts more pressure on the council to give workers a decent wage rise.

“Edinburgh’s reputation isn’t damaged by my video, it is because the council didn’t pay them decent wages to protect this.”

The video comes alongside the news that an offer has been made to the bin workers of Edinburgh, in a bid to halt recent walkouts. The details of the offer have not yet been made public, with union leaders expected to discuss the offer before putting it to members for approval.

With the strike set to end at 4.59am on Tuesday, extra resources are being sent out to support street cleaning and bin collections. On scheduled collection days, residents are being asked to leave extra waste in bags beside wheelie bins if necessary.
