A campaign by Edinburgh Live to clean up Edinburgh's parks and streets has won cross-party support in the Scottish Parliament.
Edinburgh Live has partnered with In Your Area, Clean Up Britain and a host of celebrities like Jeremy Paxman to call for an end to selfish littering.
After winning early support from Lothians MSP Miles Briggs in the form of a motion in the Scottish Parliament, the campaign has now secured the backing from a number of other MSPs.
Scottish Labour MSP Neil Findlay has joined fellow politicians including Edinburgh Western's Alex Cole-Hamilton in support of the call for laws that prevent littering to be enforced.
The campaign calls for the maximum fixed penalty notice fine for littering to be increased to £1000.
Lothian MSP, Miles Briggs, said: “I am pleased that my motion at the Scottish Parliament has received cross party support, reinforcing that all parties are committed to cracking down on littering.
“If people are using these outdoor areas it is their responsibility to ensure that they clear up and bin or take home their own litter.
“It is unacceptable to expect someone else to clear up your rubbish and laws against people littering must be enforced if people aren’t going to follow them.”
Since lockdown was lifted, we've heard from readers across the city about litter hotspots, with people leaving behind their rubbish at local beauty spots across the Lothians.
