Edinburgh Live readers share what they would change about the Christmas Markets

Does it even feel like Christmas until the Edinburgh markets are set up?

A staple of the capital's festive season and a worldwide attraction for thousands of tourists each year, the markets and stalls are known for their foods, crafts and drinks.

Although usually jam-packed with people from start to finish, the markets have caused some controversy in recent years, with complaints over their size, space and contents.

In response, this year the Edinburgh Christmas event is set to be slightly different, with a more spaced-out layout to allow for better distancing and slightly different attractions.

You can find the full rundown of everything that will be making an appearance this year here.

However, to see how things could really improve, Edinburgh Live reached out to our readers to see what changes they would make.

More variety

A number of readers raised concerns that the markets had become to similar, with the stalls all selling "different versions of the exact same thing."

With many comments suggesting a better range of products, it was also mentioned that the prices of the goods on offer was "catered to tourists."

One reader said: "We need more variety and choice of stalls. It's the same three stalls repeated over and over again."

Another replied: "Needs different stalls and more variety rather than the same stuff every year."

It appears the scented candles and cashmere scarves may not be to everyone's taste, with a host of responses claiming the items were again "just there for tourists."

More Scottish produce

Although most of our readers agreed that the German aspect was great and needed, many also called for local retailers and Scottish produce to appear more often.

One reader wrote: "We need more local stalls from Edinburgh and surrounding area or at least around Scotland."

Another agreed, replying: "It would be great to see part of it like a big Scottish farmers market."

On the topic of staying local, a number of people suggested they would like to see "more local buskers and musicians" attending the attraction.

Increased seating areas

A wave of suggestions from readers also put forward the need for more seating, especially for those with disabilities or the elderly.

With the markets usually crammed full of visitors, one reader wrote: "More thought needs to be given to access for disabled, vulnerable people and children. There is no marshalling within the market means it’s a free for all and crowds get to dangerous proportions."

A number of people agreed with the thoughts on access, with many stating previous events have "not felt wheelchair friendly."

Cheaper prices

One of the most common changes submitted was to lower the prices of the rides, refreshments and products on the market stalls.

Speaking about the money, one reader wrote: "The wheel thing is extortionate for a family, £50 a go! So is the Glue wine that tastes rotten and once cost £11 a mug. Crazy."

Another replied: "It needs to be made more affordable for me to want to go, tt's way too expensive and much too samey. The make-a-quick -buck-by-caning-everyone approach has backfired, increasingly turning the whole thing into an attraction to walk round and look at, but not to spend money in."
