Edinburgh KFC restaurant forced to close its doors after 'unwelcome guest' showed up

An Edinburgh KFC restaurant had to close its doors last week after an "unwelcome guest" made a surprise appearance.

The shock visitor was spotted in the Hermiston Gait eatery, with startled staff staff forced to temporarily shut the place down as a result.

The identity of said visitor? If you're thinking we're talking about a rude customer you'd be wrong.

An Edinburgh Live reader suggested rats had been seen scurrying around the restaurant last Monday (7 December). They said this resulted in in the fryers being switched off, the doors locked and a deep clean carried out, along with a prompt visit from pest control.

When asked about this version of events, KFC were keen to point out that the visitor wasn't exactly a rat. However they did admit there was an unwelcome guest on the premises, and promised they are working hard to resolve the issue.

A KFC spokesperson said: “It wasn’t a rat, but we did have an unwelcome guest at our Hermiston Gait restaurant. We’re on the case – the restaurant closed to ensure the issue was fully fixed and we hope to have everything sorted very soon.”

Edinburgh Live is currently making attempts to establish the exact identity of said guest. We could hazard a guess, but we wouldn't want to publish such speculation.

While the rat theory appears to have been ruled out, the rodents have been making waves in other parts of the city.

Last week it emerged that around 70 per cent of rats in the Scottish capital are now not responding to popular pest killers, and the creatures have mutated a new resistance gene which makes them immune.

There's also been a huge boom in the city's rat population, with a busy year of breeding taking the total number to more than a million.
