Edinburgh KFC leaves customer confused after refusing Eat Out discount on order

An Edinburgh woman was refused an Eat Out to Help Out discount at a local KFC.

After ordering through the self-service terminal, she was told to contact customer service as the discount is not applied automatically.

Twitter user @mridul_wadhwa had visited the chain on South Charlotte Street at around 6pm on Tuesday (11 August).

She had used the self-service terminal, which did not clearly explain how to claim the discount.

When she approached staff, she was told to contact their customer service team.

Responding to questions from Edinburgh Live, KFC said there had been some confusion when the customer ordered her meal.

"Looks like there was some confusion here with our self-service counters as the Eat Out to Help Out scheme needs to be selected when buying a meal.

"We’re sorry this was missed and we look forward to welcoming back Wadhwa for the discount on her next visit for dine-in whilst the scheme is still running."

But Wadhwa pointed out this could be an accessibility issue, especially for people who do not have English as their first language and could struggle to select the right option on the terminals.

The UK Treasury scheme is designed to help the hospitality after it was forced to shut down

It offers up to £10 per head off any bill for food and non-alcoholic drinks.

Over 100 restaurants around Edinburgh have signed up to the scheme.

The Eat Out to Help Out rules

  • 50% off food and drink at participating restaurants
  • £10 per person limit to discount
  • Alcoholic drinks and service charge not included
  • Only applies to people ordering food to eat on site
  • Applies only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in August
  • Can be used as often as you like on those days
  • Automatically applied at the till, no voucher needed
