Edinburgh jokers are competing to see who can get the most random tweet onto new Lothian bus screens

Lothian buses introduced swanky new 100-seat, environmentally-friendly buses in Edinburgh last month, and the reaction to the swish new rides has been great.

One thing that the Alexander Dennis Enviro400XLB Euro 6 vehicles have that their less high-tech predecessors don't is a screen displaying the latest tweets and replies to their official Twitter account, @on_lothianbuses.

However, photos don't display on the screens, meaning that tweets that were meant to accompany a photo just appear out of context, which means they can sometimes seem a bit random - to say the least.

Hilarious 'how to wear a kilt' army video filmed near Edinburgh goes viral and leaves viewers in stitches

And bored commuters have decided to have some fun with the new phenomenon, announcing a competition to get the weirdest possible tweets to appear on the Lothian Buses screens.

In a post on Reddit, a user called --cheese-- (great name) said:

"First time I got one of the new 16s, there was a tweet about a missing person that made zero sense without the image for context."

Which started a conversation about the most random tweets other users had seen:

Damnmark said: "I saw one a few days ago that just said “Yikes!”

The game is afoot (Reddit)

That in turn sparked a plan to have a bit of fun with the screens:

inexplicable_freak said: I wonder what the most irreverent and absurd tweet we can get posted on the screen.

--cheese-- replied: "It's only tweets from the official Lothian Buses account that go up, I'm afraid."

But FakeKitten wasn't deterred, saying: "So, we need to create some tweet that they will reply to in what will seem most odd out of context."

Challenge accepted.

Now all we have to do is watch the screens, and wait...

UPDATE: They replied! But the dog gif won't display on the new screens, sadly. Thanks for playing along, Lothian Buses.
