Edinburgh Jenners: Sports Direct's Mike Ashley told reinstate iconic sign

Sports Direct's Mike Ashley has been instructed to reinstate the iconic Jenners sign.

There was outrage after locals captured the moment workmen unscrewed the classic golden letters on the Princes Street store last week,

The owner of Jenners, Anders Polvsen, released a statement to say he is "surprised" after the iconic frontage was removed and said this had not been discussed with Sports Direct,

He insisted there would be launching an investigation and pointed to the signage being part of the listed building.

It has now been revealed that chief executive of Frasers Group Plc. Mike Ashley has been told to reinstate the sign by Edinburgh Council officials.

Sports Direct billionaire, the current tenant, has three months from when an enforcement notice comes into effect on 14 May, reports the BBC.

It's understood the sign is currently being stored on the department store's sixth floor, with haunting photos showing the gold letters stacked against a wall.

Neil Gardiner, City of Edinburgh Council's planning convener, told the BBC: "We can confirm that a listed building enforcement notice has been sent to the owner and the tenant of the building.

"It requires the lettering to be reinstated in its original positions on the Jenners building."

In January it was announced by the Frasers Group that they would not be continuing their tenancy in the building, meaning the store would cease trading after 183 years.

However, the historic Jenners department store will be kept open as part of plans to transform part of the famous building into a hotel.

There had been fears that the shop would close its doors for good when the Category A listed property undergoes a dramatic transformation.
