An independent boutique located on Candlemaker Row which specialises in items designed or handmade by indie Scottish designers is closing its doors for good after 10 years in business.
Hannah Zakari, ran by Rachael Griffiths, is well known for its beautifully crafted items and affordable art prints. The shop, which offered an 'alternative' to the usual chain high street shopping experience, opened their 'bricks and mortar' boutique in July 2010 after six years online.
However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the much-loved indie business is set to close its doors for good.
The shop wrote on their Facebook page: "It will come as no surprise that this year hasn't been easy as a 'bricks and mortar' retailer but I didn't anticipate just how quiet it would be since reopening in July.
"The absence of the Edinburgh Festival this month has been another blow in what would normally be our busiest time of year, and I'm sad to say that the HZ Shoppe will close at the end of August."
Their online shop will remain open and right now they're having a sale with 50% off and will have their physical shop operating on reduced hours every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the end of the month.
Owner Rachael signed off: "It's been a privilege - and lots of fun! - to open the door to our wonky shop on Candlemaker Row almost every day for the last 10 years. I've made lots of friends, lots of mistakes and learned a ton along the way.
"This spanner in the works comes with a sense of anticipation and optimism, and whilst it is sad to go out this way, I'm also excited for the next chapter."
