Edinburgh in first wave of BT's 5G 'workplace of future'

Edinburgh will be home to one of BT's first 5G enabled 'workplaces of the future' with built-in mobile connectivity alongside fibre connections.

The telecoms giant announced eight locations - some of them new offices and others existing refurbished BT buildings.

They will be created as part of a three-to-five-year Better Workplace Programme.

BT Group aims to reduce its more than 300 UK locations to around 30, including corporate offices, contact centres and specialist sites. BT’s telephone exchanges will be retained by the Group.

The other cities confirmed are Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Ipswich, London and Manchester.

BT Group employs more than 7,700 people in Scotland.

BT Group chief executive Philip Jansen said: “The Better Workplace Programme is about bringing our people together in brilliant spaces, and transforming the way we work.

"Revealing these eight locations is just the first step. We have dedicated teams working on identifying the best buildings to move into and which ones to redesign for the future.

"As a result of this programme, BT people will be housed in inspiring offices that are better for our business and better for our customers.”
