Edinburgh IKEA confirms re-opening date as Scottish lockdown begins to ease

Edinburgh's IKEA has confirmed that they will re-open their doors tomorrow alongside a number of other businesses as lockdown begins to ease in Scotland.

The Swedish furniture company will join other homeware shops, which are allowed to re-open alongside a small number of other businesses such as hairdressers. (Full list here. )

IKEA was forced to close its doors when Nicola Sturgeon plunged Scotland into another Covid lockdown on Boxing Day after a surge in cases, and this will be the first time it has allowed customers inside the store this year.

An IKEA spokesperson told Edinburgh Live: “With life at home more important than ever, we are looking forward to welcoming our customers back into our stores from 5th April.

"As before, we will reopen with extensive measures in place and ask everyone to play their part in helping to keep each other safe. In the meantime, customers can continue to shop with us online for home delivery or Click and Collect.”

Last November we reported how customers were forced to wait over 20 minutes to be served at the till of the popular furniture store because so many people were inside.

With lockdown boredom causing an increase in DIY, pictures showed queues stretching a huge distance from the shop's exit, with people lining up on a trail that seemed to stretch all the way around the warehouse.

In a tweet at the time, @Barriestweeting said: "If by any chance you have it in your mind to visit @IKEAUK today....don’t do it! Current queue situation at Straiton 20 minutes waiting to get to the till."

We will be taking a trip to the IKEA re-opening tomorrow at around 11.30 am, and we'll have video from the scene live on our Facebook page.
