Edinburgh hotel closed for re-vamp named one of most promising in the world for 2023

An Edinburgh hotel, located on the capital's busiest street, has been named as one of the best in the world that will open this year in a new ranking by The Times.

The paper recently unveiled their list of '30 best new hotels' around the world for people to look forward to in 2023. With locations such as Italy, France and Portugal all making the list, it may come as a surprise that one of Edinburgh's claimed sixth spot.

Although currently closed for redevelopment, 100 Princes Street, with front-seat views of Edinburgh Castle, was labelled as one of the most promising locations to visit in the coming year.

The Record reports how the historic and cultural hotel was the only Scottish venue to make the top 30, with big plans to become a hub for tourists once it re-opens in August 2023.

The hotel, like many others, is an incredibly intriguing one. The former Royal-Over-Seas League Clubhouse will soon be transformed into a luxurious place to stay, with its new look being inspired by Alexander McQueen.

When it was purchased by the League in 1929 and reopened by the Duke of York as a club a year later, it became the first mixed club in Edinburgh where many high-ranking officials from the Commonwealth often stayed.

Among plans for 100 Princes Street is a stunning hand-painted mural featuring several famous explorers in an eye-catching display you won't see anywhere else. It will also feature plenty of custom-made tartan designed by Araminta Campbell of whom King Charles is a big fan.

Although only including 30 bedrooms, those in charge maintain they have been designed to be "lushly OTT," offering the utmost comfort and relaxation for guests.

No hotel stay would be complete without a drink or two, and 100 Princes Street promises to deliver just that.

The destination will feature a wine wall with over 200 fine wines showcasing the range from the family-owned vineyard Bouchard Finlayson and an impressive collection of acclaimed Scottish whiskies adorning another wall.

There will be a carefully curated menu full of cocktails, hand-crafted spirits and "rare liberations" that guests can take their pick from before relaxing for the evening in front of the fire and panoramic views of Edinburgh Castle.

100 Princes Street, part of the Red Carnation group, opens its doors to the public in August 2023 with double rooms priced from £330 per night.
