Edinburgh hospital worker killed pensioner after reversing over her, court hears

A 92-year-old woman was killed after a man reversed out of his driveway on Southhouse Avenue in Edinburgh and run over her, a court heard yesterday.

Francis Creedican, 58, an NHS Lothian project manager, admitted that he did not keep a proper lookout as he reversed out of his driveway.

Christina Young, 92, was walking past his driveway with a frame before Creedican reversed out and drove over her, the Daily Record reported.

The mother of two was found to have died from multiple injuries in a post-mortem, incuding rib fractures.

Creedican, who has no criminal history and works at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, left his car and immeadiately called 999 when he found Christina Young lying face down with a head injury.

She was taken to the Royal Infirmary but died from her injuries at around 9pm.

The court heard that Mrs Young was very fit and mobile for her age, but used a metal framed walker for support.

Creedican admitted causing death by careless driving after his plea was reduced from death by dangerous driving, a more serious charge.

Prosecutor Angela Gray said: “Investigators carried out a reconstruction and concluded that Mrs Young had walked almost all the way past the accused's car before being struck.

“Mrs Young, who was a much loved woman, had a routine of getting up early and walking to the shops to collect her morning paper each day.

“She was walking on Southhouse Avenue around 8am when she was struck by the car.”

Police Scotland examined Creedican's car ad found the back window was misted over and could not be seen out of.

However, the car was fitted with a camera on the front dashboard and it was clear that the accused could have used this or his wing mirrors to check it was safe to move out.
