East Lothian homeowner surprised after 'mice problem' was actually lost hedgehog

An East Lothian woman was shocked to find a hedgehog taking shelter in her bedroom early on Saturday morning.

June Weaver was woken up in her bungalow in Gullane, just off Muirfield Park, by her dog, Cobi, at 5am on Saturday morning sniffing around as if something was bothering him.

Upon looking for what she assumed to be a mouse, June found the prickly creature hiding beside her bed.

She said: "It was certainly quite a surprise. In the warm summer nights we leave the back sliding door open slightly. Our home is all on one level, so no stairs. I can't imagine why the hedgehog would come in in the first place.

"Our dog Cobi, who is a Griffon Bleu do Gascogne, woke us snuffling about the hallway then around our bedroom. We initially thought a mouse, never imagined the intruder would be a creature we rarely see."

Most of us will never get close enough to a hedgehog in our lives to even get so much as a photo. The nocturnal animals usually do most of their exploring during the night, making them quite rare to spot.

Whilst most people would probably scream and call for help, June remained composed enough to hatch a plan on moving their spikey friend back where he belongs:

"We carefully moved everything away, allowing us to pick it up using oven gloves and into a box. We lifted it straight to the grass outside and beyond our garden. It curled up as I placed it down, then swiftly scurried away.

"It makes for a lovely encounter with our wildlife."

For those that also leave their sliding doors open during the summer, you better be prepared to grab the oven gloves from now on if you hear an unusual noise!
