Edinburgh Hogmany party voted number one in world in festival bucket list

Edinburgh's official Hogmanay celebrations have been ranked as the world’s best bucket list festival.

Scotland’s biggest New Year’s party beat the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Munich’s Oktoberfest, the Rio de Janeiro Carnival,
St Patrick’s Day in Dublin and Glastonbury.

Hogmanay was also rated ahead of the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, London’s Notting Hill Carnival, San Diego’s Comic Con and La Tomatina, Valencia’s tomato-throwing event on the 50 Best Festivals in the World list.

Travel industry bible Big Seven called Edinburgh’s three-day festival “an experience you are never going to forget”.

It added: “New Year’s Eve is celebrated in many different ways around the world but few places are quite as spectacular as Edinburgh.”

This year’s Hogmanay will include 80s pop star Marc Almond, DJ Judge Jules, indie band Idlewild and singer-songwriter Eddi Reader, with the street party reaching the Royal Mile for the first time in 20 years.

A spokeswoman for Underbelly, the organisers of the festival since 2017, said: “We’re delighted Edinburgh’s Hogmanay has been recognised as No1 in The 50 Best Festivals in the World.

“Clear your diary for 30 December to 1 January and be there.”

Donald Wilson, Edinburgh City Council’s culture convener, said: “There is no better place to celebrate Hogmanay than in Edinburgh and it’s fantastic that it’s been recognised as the No1 festival for bucket lists.”
