Edinburgh hit with pollen bomb on bank holiday weekend with high levels expected

Hay Fever sufferers have been warned to be on their guard against a pollen bomb set to explode in the Capital over the bank holiday weekend.

Tracking data from environmental agency Ambee and the Kleenex pollen forecast has predicted Edinburgh will experience unusually high levels of tree pollen in the air as the city enters ‘peak season’.

Estimates place pollen levels in Edinburgh at around 477 pollen grains per cubic metre (PPM) on Saturday, when temperatures are expected to reach a high of 13.

Levels are expected to rise again on Sunday, despite a slight fall to 11 degrees, with the pollen count placed at a whopping 497 PPM.

Measures between 200 and 703 PPM are considered ‘high,’ with anything over 704 ranked as ‘very high’.

Grass pollen is also set to be high, with 65 and 68 PPM expected over Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Pub beer gardens are now allowed to reopen amid the latest easing of COVID-19 restrictions, with local expected to be out enjoying the return of outdoor hospitality ahead of Monday's bank holiday.

Those who live with allergies to the substance have been urged to take extra precautions.

An estimated 13 million people across the UK are thought to suffer with hay fever, which commonly triggers runny noses, sore, itching eyes and sneezing fits when high levels of dust or pollen is in the air.

The Kleenex Pollen Forecast allows those living with the allergy to track the count live online.
