Edinburgh hikers in dramatic rescue after being spooked by Highland cows in dark

A couple of late-night Edinburgh walkers had to be helped by a mountain rescue team after becoming increasingly worried about the presence of Highland cows.

Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team were called out at 7pm last night to locate and rescue two walkers that had misjudged how dark it would get during their ambitious climb up the Pentland Hills.

18 members of the team were available to assist the search, that after a special link via SMS was sent to the lost couple, was easy enough to carry out.

An hour later, a connection was made with the couple who had been caught out by fading light and were worried about their safety given the presence of large highland cows in the area.

There were no injuries to report from the rescue, although the couple were very cold as the air temperature at the time had plummeted to 5oC.

The couple had explained to the team how they got caught out by the impending darkness and didn't want to risk walking too close to the intimidating animals.

The Tweed Valley team said that the couple were right to phone them to ensure they were safely free of any possible danger and issued a timely reminder that this sort of problem often catches out walkers who misjudge how dark it can fall during the winter months.

They recommend a map, compass, torch and spare batteries for anybody who is thinking on taking a late-night hike up the popular Edinburgh hills and reminded people to wrap up warm as the temperature often drop when darkness falls.

This was the team's 71st callout of the year, with most coming in the way of assisting people who have suffered injuries whilst exploring the outdoors. The team also assist their colleagues at the Scottish Ambulance Service on certain jobs.
