Edinburgh high school students could face strict two-metre social distancing rule

Scotland's high school pupils could face strict social distancing measures when they return to school as part of the nation's phased return of students to in-person teaching.

A report published by the Scottish Government's Advisory Sub-Group on Education and Children’s Issues yesterday outlined how the transmission of COVID-19 could minimised when secondary school students return to classrooms.

The two-metre rule is already in place for teachers at secondary schools, but the new report says that pupils should also follow the measure in order to stay safe.

They added that "it will be also be necessary to ensure two metre distancing on school transport for secondary schools".

Advice issued on the wearing of PPE in secondary schools suggested that "cloth face coverings are considered appropriate."

Tweeting the new report yesterday, Education Secretary John Swinney described the update from the advisory group as "an important scientific and clinical update".

It is hoped that Scotland's youngest pupils will return to classrooms from February 22.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is set to make a lockdown review announcement on Tuesday (February 16).
