Edinburgh HGV drivers 'urgently needed' as salaries rise to over £40,000 with joining bonus

As the HGV driver shortage continues to impact many industries in the UK, employers are advertising driving jobs with bumped salaries and joining bonuses in an effort to recruit new workers.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a significant delay in HGV driver tests - meaning there are fewer workers to meet with an increased demand.

As a result, companies are offering salaries over £40,000 to try and entice potential workers to deliver food, fuel and other assorted goods across the country.

The industry's trade body the Road Haulage Association (RHA) stated that there is currently a shortfall of around 100,000 drivers, which has contributed to many problems such as the petrol crisis and supermarket shortages, as reported by Glasgow Live.

Managing Director of Policy & Public Affairs at the RHA told BBC Newsnight: "We have got a shortage of 100,000 [drivers].

"When you think that everything we get in Britain comes on the back of a lorry, whether it's fuel or food or clothes or whatever it is, at some point, if there are no drivers to drive those trucks, the trucks aren't moving and we're not getting our stuff."

Because of this higher demand, companies are willing to pay more to hire new drivers in and around Edinburgh.
