Edinburgh has wettest February on record with over 120mm of rain falling so far

The capital's rainfall, recorded in Edinburgh Botanics, has smashed nearly 80 years' worth of records, with the wettest February to date.

As reported by STV News' Sean Batty, much of central and southern Scotland has experienced a record-breaking amount of rainfall this month - and it's not over yet.

According to the weather expert, Edinburgh Botanics is particularly "noteworthy" having rainfall that broke 78 years’ worth of records with 127mm of rain falling so far this month.

To compare, this is two-and-a-half times the months average rainfall.

Looking back over the past month this doesn't come as much of a surprise after Storm Ciara swept in causing travel chaos, with heavy rain and the capital's first proper snow of 2020.

The storm brought flash flooding in a number of areas, with Seafield Road turned into a river, while Edinburgh Waverley shut to non-ScotRail services and a section of the Edinburgh tram line was also closed due to flooding.

The situation went from bad to worse when the Queensferry Crossing closed after cars were hit by falling ice, one driver said: "[It] could have killed someone".

Storm Dennis was hot on the heels of Storm Ciara with more disastrous flooding in the Scottish Borders and, last week, gusty winds saw the roof trolley shelter blown clean off in a Morrisons car park.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the severe weather is showing signs of slowing down just yet, with a yellow weather warning for ice issued across Edinburgh and the Lothians today.

Commuters were warned to be cautious when driving or walking and even suggest that people considered not cycling.
