Edinburgh getting new Costa Coffee in Leith as they take over former Semichem

Leith's Newkirkgate Shopping Centre is set become home to a new Costa Coffee venue after Edinburgh Council approved planning permission to change the use of a shop site to that of a coffee shop.

The site is currently home to budget shop Semichem but will now be taken over and revamped by the high street coffee giant.

In a letter to the council, property agents Savills explained that "the subject premises are currently operated by Semi-Chem on a temporary, rent-free rolling basis, having previously served notice to end their lease."

Drawing plans for the site at 8-9 Newkirkgate show a designated outdoor seating outside the cafe for shoppers to sit and enjoy a coffee in.

A member of the public commented on the plans for the chain coffee shop: "This would be a nice addition to the Kirkgate - at present there is only Greggs to go and sit eat while in the Kirkgate."

Costa currently also have three other sites in Leith; on Leith Walk, in Ocean Terminal and on Victoria Dock.

It is unclear when the new coffee shop will open its doors to the public - all plans and drawings can be viewed on Edinburgh Council's planning portal here.
