Edinburgh gets in the swing for Scottish Jazz Weekend - what you need to know

Edinburgh is set to dance away the wet weather blues as the city welcomes some of Scotland's best Jazz musicians.

Scottish Jazz Weekend has been organised by the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and begins on Friday 21 February for a long weekend of performances coming to a close on Monday.

A packed programme will see 17 concerts take place across the capital, venues include: The Jazz Bar, The Queen’s Hall, Heriot’s Rugby Club, Teviot Row House and St Brides Centre.

Performances come from a range of artists, from traditional New Orleans acts to more modern electronica-infused takes on the genre.

The Scottish Jazz Weekend 2020 line-up includes pupils from the Edinburgh Jazz School, while veteran singer Emilie Boyd will bring her unique mix of French and Scottish musical styles.

Electronic Jazz pioneers ESINAM and HERSCHEL 36 will also take to the stage with their experimental sound sure to get people on their feet.

For the New Orleans purists there are two shows hosted by the award-winning Alison Affleck, who leads all-female trad band The Red Hot Rhythm makers.

Affleck will also be joined by New Orleans native, Joplin Parnell for a duet that is sure to get even total jazz newcomers into the swing of things.

A range of workshops have also been put on for those looking to test their jazz hands.

These sessions include on by the Tinderbox orchestra, which invites young players and singers for a lively open rehearsal.

Prices vary between the different events but any of those hosted the St Bride’s Centre are allowing children to go free as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult.

There are also a discount on ticket prices of £2.50 for students, and unemployed or disabled people.
