Edinburgh George IV Bridge fire: Pictures show burnt out aftermath of devastating blaze

The aftermath of the horrendous fire on George IV Bridge has begun to come to light after images emerged of the exterior damage.

A huge emergency response attended the blaze in Edinburgh's Old Town on Tuesday (August 24) after initial reports were made at around 6.18am.

Crews were seen battling the smoke and flames for almost an entire day, with two firefighters injured, one of whom was taken to hospital for additional treatment.

Onlookers had watched in horror as smoke billowed out of Patisserie Valerie and spread throughout the Elephant House and upper floors.

On Thursday, the City of Edinburgh Council confirmed that the bridge is still closed to traffic, and released images showing the extent of the damage outside the building.

In a picture posted on social media, the front windows of the Elephant House appear to have completely shattered, with smoldering clouds of smoke still slowly emerging from the darkened interior.

Patisserie Valerie also appears to have suffered worse damage, with the exterior seen to be black with ash as well as shattered glass surrounding the frontage.

At present, council officials confirmed that a number of structural engineers are on site to assess the damage before reopening the road, with hopes of saving as much of the A-listed building as possible.

A tweet from the council read: "Following Tuesday's fire George IV Bridge remains closed to traffic with pedestrian access north of the bridge. Our Shared Repairs team, along with structural engineers, are currently on-site assessing buildings for damage + providing advice."
