Edinburgh George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row still closed to cars after huge blaze

The major fire that broke out on George IV Bridge on Tuesday morning is continuing to cause travel disruption in the Old Town with both George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row remaining closed to vehicles.

Edinburgh City Council have announced that the fire which ravaged the Patisserie Valerie, Elephant House and Oz bar as well as a host of private properties, will mean that access to George IV will still be severely restricted.

Both George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row - which was badly impacted during the fire - will remain closed to vehicle traffic.

However some pedestrian access has been restored as emergency services and other relevant actors work to try to repair the damage caused by the devastating blaze.

Travel News Edinburgh said on Twitter: “Following Tuesday's fire, George IV Bridge & Candlemaker Row remain closed to vehicle traffic. Some pedestrian access has been restored but there is no through-route while work continues to make the site safe.

“We'll continue to provide updates as we get them.”

Whereas the central library said that they “will be open as usual from 10am but you may only approach the library from Royal Mile side of the bridge.”

The major fire allegedly required over 100 firefighters to bring the blaze under control. Over a dozen Scottish Fire and Rescue Service vehicles also attended the scene.

Police Scotland had said yesterday that they were still unaware of the exact cause of the blaze.

Earlier this week Edinburgh Live had caught up with several businesses that have seen profits plummet and deliveries disappear due to the disruption caused by the fire.
