Edinburgh Fringe worker's plea goes viral after she tweets about "crying in the box office"

Dealing with the public can be challenging at the best of times, but that's doubly true during the biggest arts festival in the world: the Edinburgh Fringe.

And now one tourism worker's plea for people to be kinder to customer service staff during the festival has gone viral on Twitter after she spoke out about how she was left "crying in the box office" after one particularly bruising encounter.

In a tweet sent on 3 August, Caitlin Cavanagh wrote:

"Can’t stress this enough if ur in Edinburgh for the fringe be KIND to the customer service industry, day 2 and I’ve just spent 20 minutes crying in the box office."

It's since been retweeted nearly 500 times, and liked 3400 times.

Caitlin works for a kids' silent disco tour group, and people rushed to comment below the initial tweet and share their own experiences of rude behaviour during the Fringe.

One woman said:

"Eek! I worked for the BO for 3 yrs in customer services. I know its difficult but just remember you have the right to challenge someone on the way they speak to you, and refuse service if they continue to behave badly. Chin up."

Someone else offered her some free fruit to cheer her up and tweeted:

"Two questions, Caitlin. Will you be anywhere near George Square tomorrow? And, do you like satsumas?"n

Caitlin followed up her initial tweet by thanking everyone for their supportive comments, saying:

"The response to this is incredible, the job I do (kids disco tours) is incredibly rewarding but having people be rude is very difficult - you’ve all made my day."
