Edinburgh locals raise eyebrows at street performers 'disgusting' act

There’s a street performance in the heart of Edinburgh splitting opinions and literally making a splash.

The Human Fountains have gone viral online amid lots of viewer support, but they definitely are not Covid guideline approved. The most popular video shows the three performers gulping water and artfully spurting it back from their mouths into the air around one another.

Most viewers are on-board until two performers get very up close and personal. Two of the men swap water with one another during the performance, some are calling the show “disgusting” and the penultimate act “a step too far.”

“In this Covid economy?!” One viewer commented. “Remember when we couldn’t stand next to each other?” Another wrote.

A lot of viewers reacted positively, either saying they laughed so hard they cried or remarking on the uniqueness of the performers. Others couldn’t quite decide how they felt about it. Multiple viewers wondered what they had just watched.

“I don’t know if I should be amazed or disgusted,” one viewer wrote. Although germs and pandemic concerns were a big preoccupation of viewers, others commented on the water wastage.

“Water shortage and plastic bottles. Future Tory leadership candidates,” one user commented. Outrageous and uncaring during a water shortage.”

Most viewers on TikTok simply enjoyed the novelty of the performance during Edinburgh’s festival. “Just a completely normal day at Edinburgh Fringe,” someone posted.

“POV: You’re in Edinburgh during Fringe,” another said. The performers are known as the Human Fountains, and they claim they are the world’s only human fountain show.

The Californian trio starred on America’s Got Talent in 2018 as quarterfinalists, and they have millions of followers on TikTok. The group has a full show running throughout the Festival Fringe as well. The street performances that many have caught on film are previews of the full event.

Tickets and information about the show are here.
