Edinburgh floods: Emergency flood warning as thundersnow and rain batters Edinburgh and Lothians

As rain continues to fall in the capital this evening (Friday 4 December), an updated flood alert has been issued for Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Surface water flooding is expected tonight and tomorrow (Saturday 5 December) as the area is faced with persistent rain teamed with snowmelt.

Floodlines Scotland have said that the greatest risk will be in urban areas where there is the most traffic and across the transport network in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Rivers will also respond to the rainfall and this could result in flooding from small and medium sized watercourses and locals have been warned that there may be disruption to travel and flooding of low-lying land, roads and isolated properties.

Floodlines have said: "Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property."

Reports are already rolling in this evening of flooding with the Currie area of the capital facing significant flooding on the Kirkgate at the front of Currie Kirk.

Edinburgh Travel News have said that caution should be advised if you take this route in a bid to avoid the temporary lights that are currently in place in Balerno.

Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188.
