Storm Ciara in Edinburgh: 'River' appears on Seafield Road as flooding and high winds hit city

A "river" has appeared on Edinburgh's Seafield Road as Storm Ciara hits the city, with high winds, heavy rain and flooding.

Major problems are being reported on the route, close to the retail park, with traffic said to be down to one single lane shortly before 9am.

Leith Docks HQ tweeted a picture of the flooding, calling for "urgent drainage" on the route. They posted: "A river appeared on Seafield Road, just outside the retail park (EH6 7LW). It needs URGENT drainage. It's single lane traffic due to water. Thanks #Leith."

Edinburgh Airport also took to social media on Sunday morning to warn passengers that the nearby Easfield Avenue is closed to traffic due to flooding, with diversions in place. They want passengers to leave extra time for their journey if travelling to the airport today.

In addition, they said that there's a chance of small delays and changes to some flights. Anyone with a flight booked should check with their airline for the latest information.

Edinburgh Live previously reported how many train services are set to face delays or cancellations throughout the day, with 70mph winds forecast. The Met Office said that "very strong winds" are expected across parts of the country, with gusts of up to 80mph in some parts. Weather warnings will remain in place until Tuesday midday, with snow even expected to arrive in the coming days.

As of Sunday, a yellow weather warning for wind is in place for Edinburgh, with the worst conditions expected around 2pm or 3pm. Rain is likely to continue throughout the day and gusts in excess of 50mph are likely in the afternoon.

Snow is expected to arrive on Monday morning, and showers are expected to continue throughout much of the day. Stick with us here on Edinburgh Live and we'll bring you all the latest weather updates as we get them.
