The flight - which arrived at the airport from London’s Stansted shortly after 8:45am on Monday, January 6 - was surrounded by emergency personnel before sniffer dogs were deployed from inside the terminal building.

The plane, EZY481, was due to continue on to Edinburgh, but has since been severely delayed while the high security operation continues, according to Belfast Live.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed officers were in attendance at the scene.

An easyJet statement read: "easyJet can confirm that flight EZY481 from Belfast to Edinburgh this morning was delayed on departure due to additional security checks by the airport authorities, as a precaution only.

"The safety and security of its passengers and crew is always easyJet's highest priority and we would like to thank passengers for their understanding.”

A spokesman from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) added that it was called to a "potential incident" at 8.39am and sent personnel to the scene.

It is understood the NIAS stood down before 9.30am.

The nature of the incident is currently unknown, but the aircraft had been 'escorted' from the runway.

No other flights are thought to have been affected.

A PSNI spokesperson added: "Officers attended Belfast International Airport to provide assistance for Airport Police following an incident on Thursday, January 6th."
