Edinburgh First Class train passenger fumes after he was given 'tea and toast'

A train passenger travelling to Edinburgh in first class was left bemused after only being offered tea and toast.

NHS worker Kriss Dominic was travelling to the city via Avanti West Coast to enjoy a well-earned break with his partner when he decided to upgrade his tickets to first class.

Aiming to set a relaxing mood for the holiday, Kriss was left with quite the opposite experience after not being offered any hot food during the three hour journey and instead, had to settle for tea and toast.

After departing to Edinburgh from Birmingham, Kriss and his partner were offered a drink by the service manager, who then made them aware that the some of the staff, including the chef, had missed the train departure.

"He then advised us that the chef and other service staff missed the departure and there was only him and one other colleague on board.," he told Edinburgh Live.

The only other member of staff on the train were due to depart in Preston, meaning the train was operating on the bare minimum amount of staff.

Kriss and his partner had hoped for a more substantial meal or snack, but were soon told that there was no chance of that happening with the staff situation.

"He advised us that due to all the food being raw, they couldn't cook anything and could only offer toast or some cereal. We were given one drink and some toast and that's the last we saw of them," he said.

Usually, a first class experience entails luxury treatment and complimentary food and drink. Due to the staff missing the original departure, Kriss was left with just toast or cereal for a lengthy three hour journey.

"Basically, the upgrade I paid for was for a bigger seat, one cup of tea and a round of toast. Not what you expect and not the way you want your trip to start. It's disappointing to say the least as we've always travelled in standard class and thought we'd pay that bit extra this time."

Avanti West Coast said he will be entitled to compensation.

A spokesperson also told Kriss: "You will be entitled to compensation if you haven't received any First Class service during your journey, so please log that with our Customer Resolutions team."
