Edinburgh first aiders treat over 40 casualties over busy Bonfire Night weekend

Charity volunteers assisted more than 20 revellers including two with head injuries on a busy bonfire night weekend in the capital’s city centre.

StreetAssist were called out on 23 occasions on Saturday alone to provide vital aid to those celebrating in Edinburgh.

Workers treated those suffering with an overindulgence of both alcohol and drugs over the course of the shift, as well as aiding Police Scotland in three “complex and challenging” situations.

Two people also sustained head knocks and were treated at the scene by volunteers from the Capital organisation without the need for ambulance presence during a busy evening.

Workers also stayed out past their finishing time on Friday evening to join the search for a missing woman, aided a reveller who was suffering an asthma attack and helped a man who had been the victim of an assault among 19 callouts.

It came amid a busy period for emergency crews in the city, with police and ambulance crews responding to reports of chaos in Niddrie when yobs began throwing fireworks at officers.

Riot police attended the incident on Niddrie Mains Road, while rowdy youths also reportedly threw rocks at passing cars which smashed a number of vehicles' windows including one taxi that was taking a sick woman to A&E.

Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
