Edinburgh fire service tackle church blaze on Pilrig Street in Leith

An Edinburgh resident has captured dramatic images as members of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) attended a fire at St. Paul's church in Leith on Monday November 29.

From around 6:30pm on Monday November 29, the Fire service were on the scene at what looks to be the corner connecting Leith Walk with Pilrig Street.

In an image shared by the resident, fire fighters can be seen congregating outside of the Church of Scotland’s Pilrig St. Paul’s.

There are at least nine fire officers on site including four vehicles and those from the service can be seen wearing oxygen masks with tanks attached to their back.

It is understood that the fire took hold in the roof of the building.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 6.33pm on Monday, November 29 to reports of a smell of burning at St Pauls Church, Pilrig Street, Edinburgh.

“Operations Control immediately mobilised three appliances and other specialist resources to the scene and on arrival firefighters found the roof space of the building well alight.

“A further appliance was mobilised and firefighters extinguished the fire. Crews remain on the scene as they work to make the area safe. No casualties were reported.”

Tomek Kalinowski, who witnessed the incident, said that he knew something was amiss when he spotted the four engines with hoses out on the street.
