Edinburgh fire crews rush to country road as lorry bursts into flames

Emergency services raced to an incident just outside of Edinburgh on Sunday after a lorry burst into flames.

Both the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and police were called to the road traffic incident on the A71 on Sunday evening. (June 27).

Initial reports had been made at around 8.58pm, with crews quickly attending to the scene. After a short period of time, two further fire engines had been dispatched to manage the blaze.

Edinburgh police officers had remained at the scene as fire crews battled the flames coming from the goods vehicle, with a section of the road heading westbound closed off.

However, after a few hours, the SFRS were able to successfully extinguish the fire, with no casualties or injuries reported.

It is understood that the lorry was carrying food at the time of the blaze, with the cause currently not confirmed.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.58pm on Sunday, June 27 to reports of a vehicle on fire on the A71 around half a mile from the Dalmahoy Hotel junction.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene and firefighters extinguished a fire within the trailer of a lorry.
“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe and there were no reported casualties.”
