Edinburgh fire crews race to The Kelpies after reports of dog falling through the ice

Emergency crews from Edinburgh raced to Falkirk this afternoon after a man and his dog fell through the ice.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service were called to the scene at the Helix park, home of the Kelpies, after the pair were submerged.

Multiple teams attended at the incident, with three crews and two water rescue teams from Edinburgh, Bathgate and Falkirk.

The Helix park is a popular outdoor space for many locals in the area, with walking routes, the Kelpies visitor centre as well as canals and ponds.

As temperatures have dropped to as low as -3C across the central belt, ice and snow warnings have been issued by the Met Office into the weekend.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 1.39pm on Friday, January 8 to reports of a man and a dog in water at The Kelpies, Falkirk.

"Operations Control mobilised two appliances and two water rescue teams to the scene.

"The man was out of the water prior to our arrival.

"Crews used Smokey Paws equipment on the dog before firefighters assisted in taking the animal to the vet."
