Edinburgh fire: Canongate closed off and two rushed to hospital after blaze

Two people have been rushed to hospital following a building fire on Edinburgh's Canongate.

Police, ambulance and fire crews are on the scene of the incident in the city centre, with the road closed to traffic and buses diverted away from the area.

Images from the scene show a number of fire appliances stopped on the street as firefighters deal with the blaze.

The council-run Edinburgh Travel News Twitter account said that Lothian Buses service 35 had been diverted, and people should avoid the area if possible.

Police say they are on the scene assisting with traffic management, with the road closed to passing traffic.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 3.38pm on Wednesday, February 24 to reports of a smell of burning coming from a property at Canongate, Edinburgh.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene where there was a fire in a flat of a four-storey building.

“Firefighters assisted two people from the flat and handed them into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service who took them to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

“Crews extinguished the fire and currently remain in attendance.”
