Edinburgh Festival closing fireworks will not go ahead this year

The end of the Edinburgh Festival will not be marked with a firework display this year, officials have confirmed.

Usually a staple of the capital's celebrations, thousands are known to gather on the last day of festivities to watch the huge spectacle take place at Edinburgh Castle.

However, organisers have confirmed that there will be no show for 2022, despite the festival itself going back to full production after the pandemic.

The BBC have reported that the festival's reasoning for the decision was still down to the pandemic, with those in charge stating that 'planning times' were impacted leading up to the event.

A spokeswoman for the Edinburgh International Festival said: "We won't be staging the fireworks this year due to planning times coming out of the pandemic.

"However, we will still have a large-scale free event in Princes Street Gardens."

Instead of the traditional firework display, the city will play host to a live performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra in the Edinburgh Playhouse to mark the end of the festival.

In addition, the performance will also be streamed live to the Ross Bandstand on August 27.
