Edinburgh family pay tribute to Hibs daft Leith local who died after falling ill on Portobello Road

A family has been left heartbroken after much-loved Leith local Eddie Gray died in Edinburgh.

The 52-year-old became unwell at a bus stop on Portobello Road on Saturday evening, with a local jogger stopping to help him.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he sadly passed away, his cause of death is not yet known.

The family now hopes to track down the jogger who stopped to help Eddie despite the coronavirus lockdown.

His niece Cheryl Gray spoke to Edinburgh Live.

Cheryl said: "My uncle Edward Gray was from Leith, a well-loved son and father.

"He leaves behind a huge family, he was a great uncle to all the babies of the family and most of all a great friend.

"He always had a cheeky smile and story for anyone he stopped to talk to.

"He was always in touch with all his family making sure we were all ok and had everything we needed, he would put anyone's needs before his own."

Eddie's family were left shocked after hearing the news he had been rushed to Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary

Cheryl said: "We are a really close family so for us this is a total shock, we all kept in touch every day, as a family we are all totally heartbroken and in shock.

"My uncle took unwell at the bus stop on Portobello Road and a lovely local lady who was out jogging called an ambulance and my uncle was taken to hospital and unfortunately passed away a short time after."

Eddie's family is now launching an appeal to get in touch with the kind-hearted jogger who stopped to help him.

His niece told Edinburgh Live: "We would like to thank the lady who kindly stopped and called for help for my uncle means so much to us

"We would love to thank her and give her some flowers, it means the world to us."
