Edinburgh family in shock after motorbike stolen overnight leaving gran stranded

An Edinburgh family were left shocked after a motorbike was stolen from their garden while they were sleeping.

Donna Davidson, 56, had been visiting her daughter in Corstorphine to help look after her granddaughter when her scooter was snatched from the property.

Commuting up from Biggar each week to help with childcare, Donna had been staying with her daughter Stacy on Tuesday night (July 20) when the thieves targeted their home.

After hearing the dogs barking at around midnight, Stacy told Edinburgh Live that they had no idea the bike had been stolen, and instead thought an animal had been in the garden.

Now left without any mode of transport, Donna was able to get a lift back to her rural home in Biggar but is now stranded, living over two miles from any shop or public transport.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Stacy, 32, said:

"My mum isn't working just now but she drives up for three days a week to look after my daughter.

"She used to have a much smaller scooter but had just been given this one so she could drive up to us easier and now it's gone.

"This is her only mode of transport so now she's basically stranded in the house. Even if it was just teenagers that took it, I don't think people realise the impact it can have on someone's life.

"She now doesn't have any way to get up to us and has to walk two and a half miles to the nearest shop or transport link, it's not even a road she walks along its just a rural path."

Desperately hoping to find the motorbike, which is worth around £1,700, Stacy asked locals to keep an eye out for the distinctive Joker branding that is on the vehicle.

Left feeling scared and anxious from the theft, she added:

"I posted it online and so many people commented saying about similar thefts, apparently another scooter was taken recently and someone's car.

"We've lived on Dechmont Road for six years now and it's always been so quiet and safe. We've got a young daughter and two attractive dogs and now we're worried to leave them out in the garden on their own."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 8.10pm on Wednesday, 21 July, we received a report that a motorised scooter was stolen from a property on Dechmont Road, Edinburgh. Enquiries into the incident are at an early stage.”
