Edinburgh family forced to take eight-hour round trip for coronavirus test as demand spikes

Parents have voiced their frustration on social media after having to take their children across the country to get a coronavirus test.

The Scottish Government has vowed to ramp up testing following a "major spike" in demand among those requesting tests.

And it can't come soon enough for parents who have been forced to make trips to Inverness, Aberdeen Newcastle and even further afield.

Leith-based writer Kevin Williamson took to Twitter to share his frustration after his 11-year-old developed a cough and had to stay off school.

With the family in self-isolation, they tried to get tested but found there were no available slots in Edinburgh and had to drive to Inverness.

"Testing capacity here is a crock", he said.

Others have now shared their own experiences in response, with one saying a friend was asked to travel to Nottingham from Fife for a test, while another was told Belfast was the nearest available.

She said they were told that if they couldn't afford to travel then they had to self-isolate for 14 days.

It comes as NHS Lothian has issued new health advice, warning parents and carers that children with runny noses and headaches should not be attending school.

Edinburgh Council confirmed capital schools are following the new guidance which advises that "if a child is experiencing a blocked/runny nose, headache or sore throat but not any of the classic COVID-related symptoms, they should stay off school until their symptoms have resolved and they feel well again".

The new guidance is likely to only increase pressures on testing capacity.

Nicola Sturgeon has said three new mobile testing units would be deployed this week, while the number of tests being carried out at regional testing centres will also be increased.

NHS Lothian have been contacted for comment.
