Edinburgh facing a sweltering, humid week with highs of 24°C as 'continental heat dome' moves in

We've got good news for fans of warm temperatures, but bad news for all the people (like us) who can't sleep when it's hot: the warm, humid weather in Edinburgh is set to continue this week, with some areas experiencing highs of 24°C.

However, that's nothing compared to southernmost parts of the UK, with the mercury set to reach 28°C or above during the day in parts of England.

It's said that the UK is facing a three month heatwave caused by a “continental heat dome” that will keep temperatures above-average until at least the end of September.

Higher temperatures are eight times more likely than cooler than average temperatures until the end of September, the Met Office says.

A spokesman added: “The probability that UK average temperature will fall into the warmest of our five categories is 35-40%. The coldest of our five categories is 5%.”

The south and the east will see the best of the sunshine, but the north is also set to bask in hotter-than-usual conditions.

Back to this week in Edinburgh and the Lothians, temperatures will range from the high teens to the low 20s across the area. Those sunny spells interspersed with showers - meaning humidity will be high.

The Met Office forecast says:

"It will be dry, bright and warm on Monday.

"A rather cloudy start towards the east coast. Otherwise a dry day with sunny periods, perhaps a little patchy fog along western coast of Galloway in the afternoon. Feeling warm. Maximum temperature 23 °C.

"Tuesday will have a dry, sunny start. However, cloud will increase from the west through the morning with scattered showers in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 24 °C.

Cloudy on Wednesday with outbreaks of rain extending east later, and temperatures of 21°C. Bright on Thursday with occasional showers and temperatures of 19°C. Turning cloudy again Friday."

Europe had record temperatures of 46C two weeks ago - with the mercury reaching a roasting 34C in Britain on June 29 - marking the hottest day of the year in the UK so far.

Blazing temperatures led to wildfires in Germany and Spain, sparking mass disruption.

Seven people died as a result of heat-related incidents in four days.
