An eyewitness claims a lorry driver who backed into an Edinburgh lamp post – causing chaos on the tram lines – drove away afterwards.
Police raced to close off the area surrounding Shandwick Place this afternoon (July 16) after an articulated lorry backed into a lamppost wreaking havoc for the overhead tram lines.
Edinburgh local Charles claims that he was working at his office when he saw the accident occur right in front of him. He claims that he ‘ran after the lorry’ to confront him after he saw the driver 'making off'
He told Edinburgh Live: “My office window looks opposite and basically a big articulated truck was driving along Atholl Place heading towards Princes Street.
“But Shandwick place is closed to traffic and is only open to trams and buses so public traffic has to turn left there.
“He stopped at the no entry sign and then because he wasn’t allowed to go any further he started reversing his truck back down the street and reversed into the lamppost.
Charles claims that the driver of the lorry then "drove away" despite the office worker trying to confront him.
He said: "The weird thing was he turned left heading towards Princes Street and stopped at some trees and I’m convinced he knew what he had done.
“But then he drove off and stopped on Manor Place for about ten minutes and then he drove off again.
“I actually went out when he stopped at the traffic lights at Manor Place and said ‘look mate you have just reversed your truck into that lamppost and pushed it onto the power cables.’
“He said no I didn’t and drove off.”
Police Scotland confirmed to Edinburgh Live that it was reported to them that the lorry was not at the scene.
It is understood that they are "aware of what lorry it was" and that their primary concern remains "dealing with the safety concerns at the area".
