Edinburgh emergency services race to scene as person 'struck by bus'

Police have confirmed a road collision involving a number 36 bus and a pedestrian on Henderson Street in Edinburgh this evening.

On Monday November 29 at around 7:40pm officers responded to a report of a crash involving a person and a bus en route to Ocean Terminal.

It is understood that around 50 emergency services personnel are in attendance at the scene with several vehicles parked along the road.

It is believed that Great Junction Street is closed in both directions and it is not yet understood the details of any injuries suffered by those impacted.

Residents have reported waiting behind cordoned off areas to access their homes as emergency services deal with the incident.

One resident said: “I did not witness what happened but I noticed the buses not moving from my window and then I saw the emergency services assisting someone who seemed to be under the bus. It took about 30 minutes for the fire brigade to jack the bus enough for the person to be pulled from underneath but I'm not sure what condition they were in.”

Whilst another concerned resident said: “I came out of the flat and the entire street was lit up blue with all the lights. It looked like the fire crews were trying to get the front of the number 36 off the ground for about ten minutes. The entire street was locked down, so whatever happened was obviously extremely serious.”

In pictures shared by a resident, several emergency services personnel are spotted in what looks like an attempt to get the Lothian bus off the ground.

Another shows the sheer scale of the response - with police and fire brigade vehicles parked right along Great Junction Street.

Police could be seen inspecting the underneath and inside of the bus as well as collecting statements from those in nearby bars.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were called around 7.40pm on Monday, 29 November, 2021 following the report of a road traffic crash involving a bus and a pedestrian on Henderson Street, Edinburgh.

“Emergency services are currently in attendance and there are no details of injuries at this time.

“The road is currently closed in both directions.”
