Edinburgh EICC and Corn Exchange to open as mass vaccination centres as omicron cases soar

Edinburgh's International Conference Centre is to reopen as a mass vaccination centres as part of efforts to step up the Covid booster programme and curb the spread of Omicron.

In order to tackle the 'tsunami' of new Covid cases, Scotland needs to deliver 80,000 vaccines every day, MSPs were told.

Nicola Sturgeon also announced that the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh is preparing to open as mass vaccination centre well as Hampden in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Deputy First Minister John Swinney warned a Holyrood committee this morning that the reintroduction of stricter rules over the Christmas holiday period can't be ruled out in the face of the ever-changing situation in Scotland.

He said: "I have to acknowledge that given the rapid pace of increase of Omicron cases, and the data that was shared by the Prime Minister and the chief medical officer yesterday, reinforces the points the First Minister was making on Tuesday on the severity of the threat.

"I cannot rule out that we might have to apply further constraints."

Mr Swinney urged people to reduce their social interactions before and after Christmas, as he said anecdotal evidence suggests more people are now working from home.

At the same meeting, Professor Jason Leitch spoke about the pressure the NHS is expected to come under in the coming weeks, saying the timing of the latest variant is "horrid".

He said: "We're at the foothill of the wave just now, which is why we're asking people to help us control that wave as much as they can.

"That would suggest peak in January, that would suggest peak hospitalisations two weeks after that peak."
